People ask me for Affiliate Marketing Secrets. Like I am a guru or something. I am not. I am just like anybody else. The difference is that I take the time to learn and refine my process. In the beginning, I would buy every ebook that promised fast riches, chicks, Lamborghinies and big mansions and paydays. Products that promised to show you all the affiliate marketing secrets ever created.
Nowadays I know better. There are no secrets. It is all out there for you to discover and learn. But if you were to press me for a secret, then here it is: Keywords!
When beginner affiliate marketers think about Keyword Research, they think of a semi obscure religion. Something mystical, when in reality it is nothing more than common sense and basic understanding of the niche you are after and the method to generate traffic you will use.
Let’s say for instance, that you are going to promote a fitness product using Adwords to generate traffic to your offer. Let’s say that the product you are promoting is XYZ ABS! “how to get abs in six easy steps” or whatever. What most rookie marketers are going to do is to go after “abs” as their main keyword and all the variations around that keyword like:
How to get abs
I want abs
Best way to get abs
Abs, etc.
That is the first mistake. They are going for a very generic term. Something that may have a huge traffic but doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s useful traffic to you. It may be a college kid writing a paper on anatomy. It could be a teenage girl trying to find a free exercise routing to get abs. But what you want is targeted, ready to buy traffic. It is far better to have 20 visitors a day who are ready to buy than having 150 untargeted visitors that may not be buyers and who are going to cost you money every time they click on your ad.
Then the affiliate marketer in question is going to set up his or her ads trying to stuff all possible combination of keywords in the headline and body of the ad without any regard for display url’s.
The third mistake is that they will create a landing page that is not optimized (because they haven’t targeted their keywords) which will then, turn away the visitors as they feel that the site is not relevant.
So they captured some traffic, it cost them money but in the end, that hard, earned traffic didn’t convert.
My secret is to generate targeted keywords that will be then put into really targeted Ad Groups in your Adwords account which will then be directed to a very targeted landing page. This may seem to be more work. But if you group your Keyword – Ad – Landing Page tightly around a central idea, this will in turn increase the conversion of your traffic.
You want people with a credit card in their hands, ready or almost ready to make a purchase. You don’t care about teenagers looking for free advice or who simply can’t make the purchase because they don’t own a credit card and they need their parents to buy it from them.
Target your keywords to generate the right kind of traffic. Create ad groups tightly related to each keyword and then optimize your landing page to increase conversions.
